Joyce Bawah Mogtari, a special aide to President-elect John Dramani Mahama, has called for a comprehensive reform of the process for appointing the Chairperson of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC). In a statement shared on December 14, she emphasized the need for the position to be publicly advertised and subjected to parliamentary vetting to ensure transparency and competence. Mogtari argued that such changes would help eliminate partisan bias and improve the overall efficiency of the EC, especially following the controversies that marred the 2024 general elections. She criticized the current system, noting that appointing individuals with political affiliations has significantly undermined the Commission’s credibility and led to inefficiencies in election management.
