Foot-borne diseases and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in Ghana and across Africa may soon see a significant reduction following the launch of innovative antibacterial footwear by World Shoe on December 13, 2024, at the Zinnia Events Centre in Accra. The launch marked a pivotal moment for the company, dedicated to improving lives through durable, high-quality shoes and sustainable initiatives.
The founder of World Shoe, Manny Ohonme, explained that the shoes incorporate antibacterial agents to curb the growth of harmful bacteria, promoting healthier feet. Constructed using biodegradable EVA foam, the footwear is eco-friendly, combining comfort, durability, and minimal environmental impact.
Ohonme shared his personal story of growing up in challenging conditions in Nigeria, where receiving a pair of shoes from a contest transformed his life. This experience inspired him to establish World Shoe with a mission to ensure that every child has access to opportunities that can change their future.
โI believe every child deserves the chance to walk toward their dreams. World Shoe is more than just a business itโs a movement to ensure that no childโs potential is limited by the lack of basic necessities like shoes,โ he remarked.
The companyโs efforts extend beyond footwear. Through its Akosombo-based factory, World Shoe has created over 200 jobs, contributing to Ghanaโs economic growth and sustainable development. President of World Shoe, Kojo Taylor, emphasized the companyโs commitment to empowering local communities.
โWith over 11 million pairs of shoes distributed across 111 countries, we are addressing not only health challenges but also fostering hope and dignity for underprivileged individuals. Our goal is to empower communities with the tools they need to succeed,โ Taylor stated.
Vice President of Marketing, Astor Chambers, highlighted the economic opportunities World Shoe has brought to Akosombo, including job creation, skill development, and resource provision. Chambers also addressed the companyโs target market 600 million shoeless individuals globally and its aim to minimize risks associated with foot-borne diseases through partnerships with governments and philanthropists.
โThis initiative is more than a business strategy. Itโs about joining forces with like-minded individuals and organizations to scale our impact and help millions of people worldwide,โ Chambers noted.
The antibacterial shoes and accompanying initiatives showcase World Shoeโs dedication to addressing public health challenges while supporting economic and social progress in underserved communities.
