Ghana's entertainment industry is increasingly making its presence felt in the country's political landscape. The latest to join the fray is actor and musician Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lil Win, who has announced his intention to contest as a Member of Parliament in the 2028 general election. Lil Win plans to run as an independent candidate in the Afigya Kwabre North constituency, with the goal of unseating the incumbent MP, Collins Adomako-Mensah.
Lil Win's decision to enter politics follows in the footsteps of several other entertainment industry figures who have successfully made the transition. In the 2024 parliamentary elections, actors and musicians such as John Setor Dumelo, Kwame Asare Obeng (A Plus), Baba Sadiq, and Ebi Bright won seats in various constituencies. These victories have paved the way for others like Lil Win to follow suit.
In a recent media interview, Lil Win emphasized the need for more youth in Parliament, stating that many young people are set to join the house next year to complement the senior MPs. He believes that his own experience and perspective as a young person will enable him to make a positive impact in the constituency.
Lil Win's decision to contest as an independent candidate is notable, given that many of his predecessors in the entertainment industry have run on the tickets of established parties. However, he has stated that he intends to remain independent, citing his desire to maintain his freedom to make decisions without being beholden to any particular party.
The incumbent MP for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, retained his seat in the 2024 general election, polling 16,689 votes to defeat the NDC's parliamentary candidate, Emmanuel Agumah. However, Lil Win is undaunted by this challenge, stating that he is confident in his ability to connect with the people of the constituency and address their concerns.
As Ghana's entertainment industry continues to make waves in politics, it remains to be seen how Lil Win's candidacy will fare in 2028. One thing is certain, however: the country's political landscape is becoming increasingly diverse and dynamic, with a new generation of leaders emerging to shape its future. Lil Win's ambition and determination are admirable, and his success could pave the way for more celebrities to join politics.
