Some Kumawood movie stars have shared their reasons for campaigning for president-elect John Mahama in the recently concluded elections. According to actors Big Akwess, Christiana Awuni, and Okomfo Kolege, their support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was driven by their desire to address the challenges facing the Ghanaian film industry, rather than any personal or selfish gains.

During an appearance on Daybreak Hitz on Friday, December 13, 2024, Christiana Awuni explained that the motivation behind their campaign efforts was to advocate for a better future for the creative arts sector and the youth in Ghana. Dressed in NDC paraphernalia, Awuni emphasized that their support was rooted in a deep love for the country, stressing that their primary concern was the wellbeing of the nation, not personal benefit. She pointed out that the creative arts industry is much more than just entertainment; it is a vital part of Ghana’s cultural and economic landscape. She and her colleagues, she said, decided to raise their voices for the betterment of the industry.

Big Akwess added his voice, recounting a meeting in 2015 where President Nana Akufo-Addo made promises to address the issues affecting the Kumawood industry. The actor mentioned three key areas where the current administration failed to deliver: the establishment of a film industry with a cinema, the passing of a bill to reduce the over-promotion of foreign telenovelas at the expense of local talent, and the construction of a film village. Big Akwess expressed his frustration, stating, “He has frustrated us. He said it and never did it,” referring to Akufo-Addo's unfulfilled promises.

Both Awuni and Big Akwess expressed their belief that the NPP government had not done enough to improve the creative arts industry. However, they were hopeful that John Mahama, who had previously shown interest in supporting the sector, would continue to make strides toward its development. Okomfo Kolege also weighed in, expressing optimism for the future of the industry under Mahama’s leadership. Kolege noted that although Mahama had started addressing the needs of the creative arts during his previous term, more progress could have been made had he been given a second term.

In conclusion, the Kumawood actors' advocacy for John Mahama was driven by their dedication to the growth and prosperity of Ghana’s creative arts sector. They hope that the new administration will prioritize the industry’s development, creating opportunities for both the arts and the youth.
