Bomb Contained 300g of Explosive and Was 'Remotely Operated' - Reports

New details have emerged about the deadly bombing that killed Russian General Viktor Malakhov on a Moscow street. According to reports from Russia's security services, the bomb contained approximately 300 grams of explosive material and was detonated remotely. The attack, which took place on December 17, 2024, has raised new concerns about the sophistication and coordination of the operation.

Authorities confirmed that the explosive device was planted along a major Moscow thoroughfare, strategically positioned to target the general's vehicle. The bomb, believed to have been placed at street level, was detonated using a remote trigger, ensuring the attack could be carried out from a distance. This method of operation suggests a high degree of planning and precision, as the general’s vehicle, an armored convoy, would have been a prime target for any would-be assailant.

Initial reports indicated that the 300 grams of explosives, likely a form of plastic explosive, caused significant damage when the device went off. The blast resulted in Malakhov’s death and also injured several civilians nearby. While the general’s armored vehicle absorbed some of the blast, the surrounding area was severely affected, with windows shattered and debris scattered across the street. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as first responders rushed to the scene.

The use of a remotely operated device suggests that the attackers were able to execute the bombing with minimal risk to themselves, pointing to the possibility of professional operatives behind the attack. Russian security forces are now focusing their investigation on identifying the individuals responsible, with both internal and external threats being considered. Some analysts speculate that the bombing could be the result of growing dissent within Russia’s military or an external attack aimed at destabilizing the government.

The killing of General Malakhov, who was involved in key military operations and close to the Kremlin, marks a disturbing escalation in the security risks faced by high-ranking Russian officials. President Vladimir Putin has vowed to find those responsible and has promised increased security measures for military and political leaders. The bombing has also sparked discussions about the vulnerability of prominent figures in Russia amid rising tensions both at home and abroad.
