Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has showered praise on Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin for his exceptional leadership in steering the affairs of the 8th Parliament. Afenyo-Markin expressed his desire to see Bagbin retained as Speaker in the 9th Parliament, citing his impressive track record and the benefits of having a Speaker with in-depth knowledge of the House.
While addressing Parliament on Monday, December 17, Afenyo-Markin commended Bagbin for prioritizing the welfare of members during his four-year tenure. He acknowledged that despite occasional disagreements, Bagbin's commitment to the well-being of members has been unwavering.
Afenyo-Markin also highlighted Bagbin's remarkable achievement in empowering Parliament as an institution. He attributed this success to Bagbin's unique perspective as a Speaker who has risen through the ranks from within the House.
The Effutu lawmaker emphasized that should the National Democratic Congress (NDC) decide to retain Bagbin as Speaker, it would be a welcome move, as his continued leadership would undoubtedly benefit Parliament. However, if the NDC chooses to appoint a new Speaker, Afenyo-Markin stressed that it is essential to select someone from within the House.
"We don't want an outsider," he stated, underscoring the importance of having a Speaker who is familiar with the inner workings of Parliament. This, he believes, would ensure a seamless transition and enable the new Speaker to hit the ground running.
Afenyo-Markin's comments come as the 8th Parliament prepares to close, with members set to debate pending matters at the Accra International Conference Centre. As the country looks forward to the 9th Parliament, the Majority Leader's endorsement of Bagbin's leadership and his advocacy for the Speaker's retention are likely to spark interesting discussions about the future of Ghana's legislative body.
The decision on who will occupy the Speaker's seat in the 9th Parliament will be keenly watched, as it will set the tone for the legislative agenda of the incoming administration. With Afenyo-Markin's endorsement, Bagbin's chances of retention have received a significant boost. The coming days will reveal whether the NDC will heed Afenyo-Markin's advice and retain Bagbin as Speaker.
