Rwanda, DR Congo Peace Talks Hit Snag as Mediator Angola Calls Off Meeting
The ongoing peace negotiations between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have reached a stumbling block after Angola, acting as the mediator, abruptly called off the scheduled meeting. The talks, aimed at resolving escalating tensions and armed conflicts in the eastern DRC, have been viewed as critical to restoring stability in the region.
The meeting, which was set to take place under the facilitation of Angolan President João Lourenço, was intended to bring both sides to the table to address long-standing issues, including accusations of cross-border support for armed groups. However, sources close to the mediation process have cited growing mistrust and unresolved disagreements between the two nations as reasons for the cancellation.
The DRC has repeatedly accused Rwanda of backing the M23 rebel group, which has been active in eastern Congo, causing widespread displacement and insecurity. Rwanda, on the other hand, denies the allegations and claims that the DRC collaborates with FDLR, a militia with roots in the perpetrators of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
