President-elect Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against the Des Moines Register and its top pollster, J. Ann Selzer, alleging "brazen election interference" and fraud over a final 2024 presidential poll that showed Vice President Kamala Harris leading Trump in Iowa. The lawsuit, filed under the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act, claims that the poll was manipulated to influence the outcome of the election.
The poll in question, released just three days before the election, showed Harris leading Trump by three points in Iowa. However, Trump ultimately won the state by over 13 percentage points. Trump's attorneys argue that the poll was "election-interfering fiction" designed to create a false narrative of inevitability for Harris.
The lawsuit also names the parent company of the Des Moines Register, Gannett, as a defendant. Trump's attorneys allege that Selzer, who has since retired, had a history of making polling predictions that favored Democratic candidates. They claim that her poll was not an isolated mistake, but rather part of a larger pattern of manipulation.
Trump's lawsuit seeks actual damages, statutory damages, and an order enjoining the defendants from engaging in further deceptive practices. The lawsuit also demands that the defendants disclose all information relied upon to create the poll.
This lawsuit is the latest in a string of legal actions taken by Trump against media outlets and pollsters. Earlier this week, it was announced that ABC News had reached a settlement with Trump in a defamation lawsuit, agreeing to pay $15 million in damages.
Trump's attorneys have also filed a $10 billion lawsuit against CBS News, alleging that the network engaged in deceptive conduct for the purpose of election interference. The lawsuit claims that CBS News practiced "deceptive conduct" in its interview with Vice President Kamala Harris in October.
The Des Moines Register lawsuit highlights the ongoing controversy surrounding polling and media bias in the 2024 presidential election. Trump's attorneys argue that the poll in question was a deliberate attempt to influence the outcome of the election, and that the defendants must be held accountable for their actions.
