NDC Branch Organiser Sentenced to 10 Years for Election Threats

In a significant ruling, an NDC Branch Organiser in the Central Region has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for making violent threats ahead of the December 7 elections. The accused, who reportedly threatened to shoot and kill individuals during the upcoming election, was found guilty of breaching the law on election-related offenses. This judgment underscores the judiciary's commitment to upholding peace and ensuring a free, fair, and non-violent election process.

The incident came to light after a viral video surfaced showing the NDC official making the threats. The content caused public outrage and prompted law enforcement to take swift action. The Central Regional Police Command arrested the individual shortly after the video was reported. During the trial, the prosecution presented clear evidence of the accused’s intent to disrupt the election process through intimidation and fear.

The presiding judge emphasized that such threats undermine democracy and cannot be tolerated, especially as the country prepares for its crucial general elections. The sentence of 10 years without parole serves as a warning to political actors and the public that the state will not hesitate to enforce the law to safeguard democratic integrity and public safety.

Leaders of the NDC have distanced themselves from the convicted organiser’s actions. In a statement, the party reiterated its commitment to peaceful elections and condemned any form of violence or threats. “Our party believes in democracy, and we do not condone any actions that threaten the peace and security of our nation,” the statement said.

The ruling has been met with mixed reactions from the public. Some see the sentence as a necessary deterrent to prevent violence, while others argue it may be excessive for verbal threats. However, legal experts have pointed out that the sentence aligns with the severity of election-related offenses under Ghanaian law.

As the December 7 elections draw closer, this case serves as a stark reminder that peace and order are paramount. Political parties, supporters, and citizens are urged to avoid any actions that could incite violence or disrupt the electoral process. Authorities have also assured the public that security measures will be robust to prevent similar incidents.
