Ghana is facing a pressing challenge: a staggering youth unemployment rate of 21.4%, with young women being disproportionately affected. This crisis is not only an economic issue but also a social and political one, threatening the country's stability and prosperity. The time for action is now, and Ghana's leaders must rise to the occasion to address this pressing concern.

The Ghana Compact for Political and Economic Transformation offers a comprehensive framework for tackling the youth employment crisis. This initiative aims to forge a new social contract between citizens and the government, prioritizing job creation, skills development, and sustainable economic growth. By aligning education systems with industry needs and fostering strategic public-private partnerships, Ghana can empower its youth to drive economic progress.

However, this requires bold leadership and a willingness to implement policies that prioritize merit, transparency, and enterprise. Ghana must transition from a reliance on foreign aid to a focus on trade and investment, creating a business-friendly environment that attracts capital and talent. This, in turn, will drive economic growth, create jobs, and reduce poverty.

The National Employment Policy (NEP), last updated in 2012, is outdated and inadequate for addressing the current labor market challenges. A new strategy is urgently needed, one that takes into account the rapid changes in the global economy and the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Ghana's growing population, projected to reach 50 million by 2050, presents both opportunities and challenges. With a youthful population, Ghana can reap a demographic dividend by investing in education, skills development, and job creation. However, failure to address the youth employment crisis will exacerbate social and economic disparities, threatening the country's stability.

The proposed National Convention, which brings together young leaders, political representatives, traditional authorities, and civil society, offers a unique opportunity for Ghana to commit to a harmonized approach to governance and development. This convention can help establish a lasting consensus on the future Ghanaians want and formally endorse the Citizens' Declaration of a Social Contract.

As Ghana embarks on a new journey under the leadership of President-elect John Dramani Mahama, it is essential to prioritize the youth employment crisis and develop a comprehensive strategy for sustainable growth and development. By doing so, Ghana can unlock its full potential, create opportunities for its youth, and build a prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable future for all.
