Comedian Bovi: I don’t advocate for beating children
Nigerian comedian and Nollywood actor Bovi Ugboma has shared insights into his parenting journey, revealing how his son, Chuchu, used to express anger by breaking television but has since learned to manage his emotions.
Speaking on the Honest Bunch Podcast, co-hosted by Nedu and others, Bovi opened up about his approach to parenting, emphasizing his preference for gentle parenting and his aversion to physical discipline. However, he admitted that his own parenting experience has been uniquely challenging, particularly with his son’s early behavior.
My son Chuchu used to break televisions for the fun of it. If he got angry, he would throw stuff and break the TV,” Bovi recounted. According to the comedian, Chuchu broke three televisions during moments of frustration. Despite the repeated incidents, Bovi remained patient, choosing to allow his son the space to grow and learn from his mistakes.
It got to the age where he started showing remorse, he explained. Thank God for capacity. If I couldn’t afford another TV, then the approach would have been different.
Bovi credited his son’s ability to outgrow the behavior to understanding and emotional development, not punishment. For the comedian, this experience underscores the importance of avoiding physical discipline and adopting a more nurturing approach to raising children.
I don’t advocate for beating children, he stated. You should let children be. Let them learn and grow.
Bovi’s perspective aligns with the principles of gentle parenting, which encourage understanding, communication, and patience rather than punitive measures. His story also highlights the importance of creating an environment where children feel safe to express themselves while learning accountability for their actions.
The comedian acknowledged that while every child is different, guiding them with empathy and encouragement can yield positive results in the long term. He reflected on how his son’s eventual remorse and behavior change were natural outcomes of maturity and self-awareness rather than coercion.
Bovi’s candid reflections resonate with many parents navigating the complexities of raising children in today’s world. His experience offers a reminder that while parenting may come with challenges, patience, and understanding can play a pivotal role in shaping a child’s emotional intelligence and behavior.
