NAM 1 Requests More Time to Find New Lawyers, Tells Court

Embattled businessman Nana Appiah Mensah, widely known as NAM 1, has requested more time from the court to find new lawyers to represent him in his ongoing trial. NAM 1, the CEO of the now-defunct Menzgold company, is facing 37 charges related to his business activities and has been instructed by the court to begin his defense.

On July 11, 2024, NAM 1 was informed that he was to open his defense in the case, which involves allegations against his companies, Menzgold Ghana Limited and Brew Marketing Consult. However, in response to the High Court’s order, NAM 1 filed a plea for a stay of proceedings, awaiting an appeal against the High Court’s judgment. His request was denied on December 5, 2024, with the court ruling that he must proceed with his defense as originally directed.

On December 17, NAM 1 appeared before the court without his legal team, led by Kwame Boafo Akuffo, raising questions about their absence. When the court inquired about the whereabouts of his lawyers, NAM 1 explained that he and his legal team had experienced a significant difference of opinion, which he claimed was substantial enough to prevent them from continuing their representation. He expressed his desire to address the court alone, without his lawyers present, due to the irreconcilable differences between them.

In his address to the court, NAM 1 explained that the disagreement with his lawyers was based on the direction in which they wished to take his defense. This is in respect to the tangent based upon which we wish to proceed with our defense, he said. He then made a formal request to the court, asking for more time to secure new legal counsel to represent him in the case.

NAM 1 appealed to the court for a reasonable time to scout and hire new lawyers, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to do so. He emphasized his commitment to clearing his name and affirming his innocence, not only to the court but also to the Republic and the global community. I kindly request that you grant me a reasonable time in your estimation and in the interest of justice, NAM 1 submitted.

The court has yet to make a decision on his request for additional time to find new representation. The outcome of this plea could determine the next steps in his high-profile legal battle.
