Schools Closed in Kwahu Bepong After Violent Clashes

Tensions have escalated in Kwahu Bepong, Eastern Region, after violent clashes erupted between two rival factions, prompting authorities to close all schools indefinitely. The decision comes amid fears of more violence and the safety of students and staff being at risk. The closure is part of wider security measures implemented to restore peace in the area.

The clashes, which began earlier this week, reportedly stem from a longstanding land dispute and personal grievances between the groups. Eyewitnesses reported that the confrontations quickly escalated, with individuals armed with stones, sticks, and other weapons. Several people have been injured, and property, including shops and homes, has been damaged.

Local authorities, in coordination with security forces, have taken swift action to contain the situation. Police officers have been deployed to the town to patrol and maintain order. “We are doing everything we can to ensure peace is restored and to prevent any further escalation,” a police spokesperson stated.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed the temporary closure of schools in Kwahu Bepong to protect the safety of students. “This decision is in the best interest of the children and teaching staff,” a GES representative said. Parents have been urged to keep their children at home until further notice.

The disruption has left many residents concerned about the future of education in the area. One parent expressed worry, saying, “Our children’s education is suffering, but safety comes first. We hope the authorities can resolve the conflict quickly.”

Community leaders and opinion leaders have appealed for calm and peaceful dialogue. Chiefs and elders have called for reconciliation talks to address the root causes of the conflict. Many residents are hopeful that mediation efforts will bring about a long-term solution.

The Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has also been involved, coordinating efforts to de-escalate tensions. A spokesperson from REGSEC assured the public that any perpetrators of violence would be held accountable.

Meanwhile, businesses in the town remain closed, and some residents have fled to neighboring communities out of fear. The general atmosphere in Kwahu Bepong remains tense but under control, thanks to the increased police presence.

Authorities are urging residents to cooperate with security forces and to report any suspicious activities that could lead to more violence.
