Brazilian football legend Ronaldo has announced his bid to become the next president of the country's football federation, the Confederation of Brazilian Football (CBF). The 48-year-old former striker, who earned 98 caps for Brazil, is aiming to restore the national team’s prestige and reignite the public’s passion for the sport. Ronaldo plans to replace current CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues, whose term runs until March 2026, with the election to be held in the 12 months before that.
Ronaldo, a two-time World Cup winner (1994 and 2002), expressed his concern over the current state of Brazilian football. Brazil, the record five-time World Cup champions, last won the tournament in 2002 and has not progressed past the quarter-finals in recent editions. In an interview with Globo Esporte, Ronaldo emphasized the important role football has always played in the lives of Brazilians, especially during difficult times. “For many decades, Brazilian football has been the escape route for the Brazilian people when they faced daily problems,” Ronaldo said. “This was the fuel of the Brazilian people, and today we see a total lack of interest from the population in the national team.”
Ronaldo’s motivation to run for president stems from his desire to restore the national team’s respect and prominence. He believes the Brazilian team has lost its once revered status, and he wants to work toward regaining the admiration it once commanded. Ronaldo’s vision for Brazilian football is centered on revitalizing the national team, boosting its image, and bringing back the pride that it once inspired in the country's citizens.
In addition to his World Cup titles, Ronaldo has had an illustrious career, including two Copa America titles and an Olympic bronze medal. He is currently second on the all-time World Cup top scorers list, with 15 goals in 19 appearances, just behind Germany’s Miroslav Klose. His legendary career spanned 17 years and included stints at top clubs such as Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid.
With his experience, both on and off the field, Ronaldo is well-positioned to lead the Brazilian Football Federation and reshape the future of the national team.
