The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has raised concerns about the delay in releasing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, giving an example of financial defiance as the primary cause.

In an interview earlier today, John Kapi, WAEC's Head of Public Affairs, explained that the results have not been made known due to outstanding financial obligations to technicians responsible for maintaining key equipment used in the examination process.

“The results are not ready. We issued a statement earlier outlining the challenges we are facing, but these issues persist because we have not secured the necessary funds to resolve them,” Mr Kapi stated.

The core issue, according to Mr. Kapi, lies in the malfunction of specialized scanners used for marking objective questions in the WASSCE. These scanners, which are crucial for grading, require urgent repairs. However, the technicians responsible for the restoration of the working order have suspended their services due to an unpaid debt of GH₵25 million owed by WAEC.

“We need to repair our scanners because we owe the technicians GH₵25 million, and they have withdrawn their services until we make financial commitments. While private schools pay their fees, the government covers the cost for candidates in public schools. Until this debt is settled, we cannot release the results,” Mr. Kapi explained.

The delay has also drawn concern from the minority in Parliament, who have called for the Finance and Education Ministers to be summoned to address the government's outstanding debt to WAEC.

Earlier this month, WAEC issued a statement explaining that the delay in releasing the 2024 results was due to the government’s failure to provide additional funds from an outstanding debt of GH₵118 million. These funds are essential for repairing the scanners used to process examination results.

The delay in making public WAEC results has serious hidden meaning for students, potentially disrupting their educational and career plans. Failure to meet the university admission cut-off point could force students to defer their studies or lose scholarship opportunities.
