The Ghana national football team, also known as the Black Stars, has concluded the year 2024 ranked 77th globally in the latest FIFA World Rankings. This ranking maintains their 14th position in Africa, a continent dominated by powerhouses such as Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt.

The year 2024 has been a challenging one for the Black Stars, who have struggled to replicate their past successes. The team's disappointing exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the group stage set the tone for a difficult year. Furthermore, their failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON, finishing third in a group that included Angola, Sudan, and Niger, was a significant setback.

Despite these challenges, the Black Stars have shown glimpses of promise in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The team's impressive victories over Mali and the Central African Republic have offered a glimmer of hope for a brighter future. However, these positives have been overshadowed by the team's overall performance in 2024, which has seen them win just three of their 14 matches.

The Black Stars' FIFA ranking has experienced a steady decline throughout 2024, with their highest ranking of 67th achieved in February. In Africa, Ghana ranks ahead of Zambia and Gabon but trails Cape Verde and Burkina Faso. The continent's top three teams, Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt, continue to set the standard for African football.

Globally, the top ten rankings have remained unchanged since July, with Argentina, France, Spain, England, and Brazil occupying the top five spots. As the Black Stars look to redeem themselves in 2025, they will need to significantly improve their performance to climb the rankings and reestablish themselves as a force in African football.

The Ghana Football Association and the Black Stars' coaching staff will need to work together to identify the team's weaknesses and develop a strategy to address them. With a renewed focus on youth development and a commitment to improving the team's overall performance, the Black Stars can begin to rebuild and work towards a brighter future.
