Multi-award-winning Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has opened up about the profound impact her divorce had on her career, revealing how it dramatically altered her public image. Reflecting on the toll it took, Tiwa shared that she went from being Nigeria's beloved sweetheart to being vilified by the public, who blamed her for the split.

In a candid interview on the Receipts Podcast, Tiwa discussed how she had avoided talking about the divorce until now, largely due to the harsh public reaction when the news broke. She and her ex-husband, Tee Billz, had been married from 2013 to 2018 and share a son. The singer recalled how, in the early stages of her career, she was viewed as a role model, doing everything "by the book"—attending university, getting married, and having a child.

However, the breakdown of her marriage and its highly publicized nature turned her from a national icon into a figure of controversy. Tiwa revealed that Nigerians largely blamed her for the divorce, even though her ex-husband was the one to publicly announce it. She described how her life was turned upside down as she was bombarded with calls, with many urging her to remain silent or even advising against defending herself.

Despite the advice from some well-known figures to keep quiet, Tiwa chose to speak out. In hindsight, she believes that decision worsened the situation, as it only fueled the public’s animosity toward her. After I did an interview trying to tell my side of the story, things got worse she recalled. "People were like, how dare you go and talk? You are a woman, and you are supposed to build the house! It is your fault. The painful experience left her questioning whether speaking out was the right choice.

Tiwa Savage revealed the emotional toll of her divorce, expressing confusion over how her ex-husband announced it online, yet she was left to bear the public’s anger. I didn’t break up with him, but I was the one being attacked, she said, recalling how she was dealing with postpartum depression while her son was just a few months old. Tiwa shared that only a few people supported her, while many turned to her ex. She also criticized online publications for fueling the hate with malicious headlines, adding that blogs and certain individuals contributed to the public’s negative perception of her.
