The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced a significant delay in the release of results for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), citing an outstanding debt of GH¢118 million owed by the government. This financial shortfall has left thousands of students and parents across Ghana frustrated and anxious, as they await results crucial for their academic and career plans.
WAEC officials confirmed that while the marking process for the examination has been completed, the absence of funds has hindered essential post-marking activities such as data processing and result validation. John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, explained that the council is unable to proceed with these final stages until the government settles its debt. He acknowledged the inconvenience caused to students and their families but emphasized that WAEC has incurred significant costs, and financial resources are required to complete the process.
The delay has serious consequences for students who need their results to apply to universities both locally and abroad. Some institutions have already set deadlines for admissions, making the situation even more critical. Parents and guardians are voicing their concerns, urging the government to prioritize the payment of the debt to ensure their children's academic progression is not delayed further.
Government representatives have acknowledged the problem and assured the public that efforts are being made to settle the debt. However, no specific timeline has been provided for when the payment will be made. The Ministry of Education issued a brief statement, expressing awareness of the situation and its commitment to resolving it as soon as possible.
This is not the first time WAEC has faced financial difficulties that have led to delays in result release. In previous years, similar issues have arisen due to unpaid debts, prompting questions about the sustainability of funding for WAEC and the reliability of the examination process. The recurrent nature of these delays has led to growing concerns about the long-term stability of educational assessments in the region.
In response to the delay, many students have turned to social media to express their frustration, using hashtags like #ReleaseWASSCE2024 to draw attention to the issue and demand immediate government action. As the situation continues to unfold, stakeholders are hopeful that the government will expedite the payment to avoid further disruptions to the academic calendar and ensure the timely release of results.
