No Road Safety Concerns Amidst Rising Accidents in Brong Ahafo
The Brong Ahafo region is grappling with a surge in road accidents, sparking concerns among residents and prompting authorities to take immediate action. Despite the rising number of crashes, there appears to be no widespread panic, and officials are optimistic that intensified road safety measures will address the issue.
Recent statistics reveal a troubling increase in both minor and fatal accidents across key highways in the region. The causes of these incidents range from over-speeding and reckless driving to poor road conditions and failure to adhere to basic traffic regulations. The frequency of accidents has raised questions about the effectiveness of current road safety protocols.
In response, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Ghana Police Service have ramped up safety campaigns and enforcement efforts. Road safety officers are actively engaging with commercial drivers, passengers, and pedestrians, emphasizing the importance of adhering to speed limits and other safety guidelines. Additionally, there is increased visibility of police checkpoints and patrols along accident-prone routes to deter reckless driving.
Madam Esther Kwabena, a resident of Sunyani, voiced her concerns: “It’s becoming too dangerous to travel these days, especially on weekends. Drivers are taking too many risks, and we need stricter controls.” Her sentiment echoes the worries of many locals who feel that existing enforcement measures are inadequate.
However, authorities remain hopeful. Superintendent John Tetteh of the Brong Ahafo Police Command reassured the public, stating: “We are fully aware of the increase in road crashes, and we are doing everything we can to curb this trend. We are deploying more personnel and introducing tougher penalties for traffic offenses.”
The NRSA has also rolled out educational programs targeting drivers of commercial vehicles and motorbikes, who are among the most frequent offenders. These campaigns highlight the dangers of speeding, driving under the influence, and not wearing seatbelts or helmets.
Some residents believe infrastructure plays a role in the issue. Roads riddled with potholes and poor signage contribute to unsafe driving conditions. Calls for road improvements are growing louder as stakeholders push for both short-term and long-term solutions.
Despite these challenges, there remains a collective belief that with stricter enforcement and improved public cooperation, the rising trend of accidents can be reversed. The NRSA continues to urge all road users to play their part in ensuring safer roads.
