As Christmas festivities approach, traders in Kumasi, Ghana's second-largest city, are expressing concerns over low sales. Despite the usual excitement and anticipation that come with the holiday season, many traders in the Ashanti regional capital are struggling to make ends meet.
According to traders at the Central Business District (CBD) of Kumasi, the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) overwhelming defeat in the recent general elections has significantly impacted sales. Traders who specialize in Christmas accessories, such as toys, hats, spectacles, and fireworks, are recording dwindling profits ahead of the holidays.
"Before the elections, the market was good. But now, you barely can break even. If the elections had gone in favor of the NPP, the market would have boomed," said Joy, a trader at Adum.
Despite the economic slowdown, many residents of Kumasi are determined to celebrate the holiday season. "We must celebrate because God has been good. I will really enjoy this Christmas. We will be chewing chicken and visiting the mall," said Adwubi, a shopper who was buying Christmas accessories for her children.
The city's festive atmosphere is also evident in the decorations and lighting that adorn various medians and roundabouts. The airport roundabout in Kumasi, a popular spot for photos, has been beautifully decorated with lighting accessories, creating a festive ambiance that attracts visitors from all over the city.
As the holiday season approaches, many people are flocking to the airport roundabout to take photos and make lasting memories. "I came here to take photos because the place is nicely decorated. I will be partying all through until December 28," said Mubarak Yussif, a visitor who was spotted taking photos at the roundabout.
While the economic situation may be challenging for some traders, the people of Kumasi are determined to make the most of the holiday season. As one trader noted, "We will celebrate regardless of the outcome of the elections."
