Former Hearts of Oak midfielder Gladson Awako has formally requested that he become a greater influence and leader at the club played an essential role in his exit.
Awako, who joined Hearts of Oak in 2021, departed in September 2023 after winning one Ghana Premier League title and two FA Cup trophies. In an interview with Asempa FM, the 33-year-old revealed that internal politics at the club were an outstanding factor in his departure.
"Hearts of Oak and Olympics are two different clubs. One is political, and the other is not," Awako explained. "There came a point when they felt I was becoming too powerful, so they decided to get rid of me. But there was no personal issue with me."
Awako also pointed to the leadership roles given to him by former coach Slavko Matić as a contributing factor to his growing influence within the club. "The leadership roles I was entrusted with by the coach gave me power. They felt that if I continued in that role, it wouldn’t be in the best interest of some people, so they decided to let me go."
After his going away from Hearts of Oak, Awako got back to Accra Great Olympics, who are currently competing in the Division One League after their relegation. The former captain is committed to helping his team secure promotion back to the Ghana Premier League.
Hearts of Oak's Next Match
After they win against Asante Kotoko in the Super Clash, Hearts of Oak will be looking to spring back in their next Ghana Premier League competition against Berekum Chelsea. The Phobians will endeavour to achieve to return to winning ways and improve their standing in the league.
Awako is a member of the Ghana national under-20 football team at the 2009 African Youth Championship in Rwanda and won the team the tournament. He was called up for the Black Stars for a friendly game against Argentina's national football team and made the game on October 1, 2009, his debut.
