Tesla Recalls Nearly 700,000 Vehicles Over Tire Pressure Monitoring System Issue

Tesla has issued a recall for almost 700,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to a defect in their Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). This recall, announced in December 2024, affects Tesla Model 3 and Model S vehicles built between 2017 and 2024, and Model X and Model Y vehicles manufactured from 2020 to 2024. The issue stems from a software glitch in the TPMS, which could result in inaccurate readings of tire pressure, potentially increasing the risk of tire damage or failure.


The TPMS is designed to alert drivers when a tire's pressure is too low, a critical safety feature that helps prevent accidents caused by underinflated tires. If the system fails to provide accurate information or shows false readings, drivers may unknowingly drive on tires that are improperly inflated, leading to reduced vehicle stability and a higher chance of a blowout, especially at higher speeds.

Tesla’s recall is the result of a review by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which determined that the faulty software could cause the warning light on the dashboard to remain inactive or display incorrect information. Although the issue has not been linked to any accidents or injuries, it still poses a significant safety concern, prompting the voluntary recall by Tesla.


Tesla is addressing the issue through an over-the-air (OTA) software update, a feature that has become a hallmark of the company’s approach to vehicle maintenance. The update will fix the problem remotely, eliminating the need for affected vehicle owners to visit service centers. Tesla owners will be notified directly via the company’s communication channels, and the fix will be applied automatically once the vehicle is connected to Wi-Fi.

While the recall is extensive, affecting nearly 700,000 vehicles, the impact of the issue is mitigated by Tesla’s ability to rapidly deploy software fixes. This has been a major advantage of Tesla's technology and direct relationship with customers, allowing for swift resolutions without the delays of traditional service recalls that often require physical repairs.


This recall highlights the growing reliance on software in modern vehicles, and the potential risks that can arise when that software does not function correctly. It also underscores Tesla’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety and ensure the reliability of its vehicles, even as its fleet grows exponentially.
