Fisherman jailed 40 years for rape, robbery.
A fisherman who brutally raped and robbed a woman in the presence of her two young children at Banana Inn, Accra, has been sentenced to 40 years imprisonment. Emmanuel Tetteh, popularly known as "666" or Escobar, pleaded not guilty to charges of robbery before an Accra Circuit Court.
The court presided over by Judge Isaac Addo, found Tetteh guilty after a thorough trial and sentenced him to a lengthy prison term. Tetteh is already serving a six-year sentence for a separate crime involving the theft of money and a mobile phone. The stolen phone, equipped with a tracking device, was instrumental in leading to his arrest for the current case.
In passing judgment, the trial judge took into account the premeditated nature of Tetteh’s actions. The court noted that during the robbery, Tetteh also sexually assaulted the victim in the presence of her two daughters, aged three and five. This shocking act of violence added to the severity of his crimes.
The judge further emphasized that the accused committed this heinous offense while another criminal case against him was still pending at Circuit Court 10 in Accra. Such brazen criminal behavior demonstrated a disregard for the law and a deeply ingrained criminal mindset. The court deemed Tetteh unfit to live in society and concluded that he must be incarcerated for a substantial period to protect the public.
Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, who led the prosecution, argued for the severest possible sentence given Tetteh’s antecedents. The prosecution highlighted the grave impact of the crime on the victim and her children and called for a punishment that reflected the seriousness of the offenses.
During the trial, the prosecution presented two witnesses who provided key evidence against the accused. Meanwhile, Tetteh’s defense called his wife as a witness in an attempt to refute the charges. However, the evidence and testimony presented by the prosecution proved overwhelming, leading to his conviction.
The court’s decision to impose a 40-year sentence underscores the gravity of Tetteh’s crimes and serves as a stern warning to others who may contemplate similar acts. The judge’s remarks during sentencing reflected the need to prioritize the safety and well-being of society by removing individuals who pose a significant threat.
The case has drawn attention to the plight of victims of such violent crimes and the importance of swift justice. It also highlights the critical role of law enforcement and judicial systems in addressing criminal activities and protecting vulnerable members of society.
