Man in court for allegedly slashing girlfriend, daughter with knife.
A 51-year-old car sprayer, Daniel Anum Komey, has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly slashing his girlfriend and his four-year-old daughter with a knife during a dispute. The incident occurred after a misunderstanding between Komey and his girlfriend, Charity Agbotsi, who had expressed her desire to end their relationship.
Komey is alleged to have attacked Charity with a knife, inflicting several wounds. In an attempt to protect her mother, the couple’s four-year-old daughter, Wren Naa Ayeley Komey, intervened and suffered injuries to her hand as a result. The prosecution has charged Komey with two counts of causing harm, but he has pleaded not guilty to both charges.
The court presided over by Mrs. Christina Cann, granted Komey bail in the sum of GHC 50,000 with two sureties, one of which must be justified. During the hearing, the defense counsel requested bail and indicated their preference for resolving the matter through Court-Connected Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). Consequently, the case has been adjourned to January 27, 2025, to allow for further proceedings.
Detective Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei, who led the prosecution, provided details of the case. He stated that the complainant, Janet Appiah, a 40-year-old caterer residing in Mantsemegome, LA, is a friend of the victim, Charity Agbotsi. Charity, aged 34, is also a caterer and lives in La near the Holy Reform Apostolic Church with her three children, including the injured daughter, Wren.
Inspector Opoku explained that Komey resides in Teshie with his wife and other children. About 14 years ago, Komey began a relationship with Charity. However, tensions arose when Charity informed Komey that she was no longer interested in continuing their relationship. This led to the violent altercation during which the alleged attack occurred.
The prosecution revealed that the incident caused significant physical and emotional harm to the victims, particularly the young child, who was injured while attempting to shield her mother. The court’s decision to grant bail and explore ADR reflects a measured approach to addressing the case while considering the welfare of all parties involved.
As the matter progresses, the focus will be on ensuring justice for the victims and facilitating a resolution that prioritizes their safety and well-being. The case has drawn public attention to the broader issues of domestic violence and its impact on families, emphasizing the need for preventive measures and support systems for victims of such incidents.
