Why Ronaldo wants to lead Brazil’s Football Federation.
Brazilian football legend Ronaldo has confirmed his intention to run for president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to address what he calls the deep crisis facing the country's football. In an interview with Globoesporte on Monday, Ronaldo emphasized that his main motivation is to restore Brazil's international football reputation, which has been diminishing in recent years.
Ronaldo, known for his iconic career and dubbed O Fenômeno, stated that one of his primary objectives is to bring Brazil’s national team, the Selecao, back to the glory it once enjoyed as five-time World Cup champions. I have hundreds of motivations, but the biggest one is to restore international respect for Brazilian football, he explained. Ronaldo expressed his commitment to ensuring the Selecao regains its former prestige and that players understand the importance of representing the national team.
Ronaldo's vision for the future of Brazilian football includes significant reforms within the CBF, a body he believes has been poorly managed in recent years. His criticism of the current leadership, under Ednaldo Rodrigues, focuses on the lack of long-term planning for the national team. Ronaldo pointed out that the CBF has hired temporary coaches after Tite’s departure in 2022 while awaiting the arrival of Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti. However, he added that the issue goes beyond just the leadership of Rodrigues, calling it a much deeper problem. Ronaldo is keen to involve the people of Brazil in the revival of the national team, as he believes there is now a sense of indifference toward the Selecao. My goal is to bring the people closer to the Selecao, Ronaldo remarked.
For Ronaldo to run for CBF president, he needs the support of regional clubs and federations across Brazil. He plans to travel throughout the country to share his vision and gather support. He is also committed to building a more engaged football culture and giving the national team the backing it deserves.
Ronaldo’s leadership experience further strengthens his candidacy. In 2018, he took control of Spanish club Real Valladolid, and he later bought Brazilian club Cruzeiro, where he began his playing career. While he sold his stake in Cruzeiro earlier this year, Ronaldo is now in talks to sell his share of Valladolid to avoid any potential conflicts with his CBF candidacy.
Brazil’s national team is currently coached by Dorival Junior and is in a difficult position in the South American qualifying group for the 2026 World Cup, sitting fifth and trailing seven points behind leaders Argentina. Ronaldo’s ambition is to return Brazil to its status as a football powerhouse, and he believes that, with the right leadership, the Selecao can once again achieve international success. The next CBF election is expected to take place between March 2025 and March 2026, though the exact date has not been set.
