At the 2024 CAF Awards held on Monday in Marrakech, Morocco, Nigeria, Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman, Zambia striker Barbra Banda, and South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams were recognized for their exceptional performances over the past year, each winning top honors in their respective categories.

Lookman, who had an outstanding year with both Atalanta in Italy and Nigeria’s Super Eagles, was named the CAF Men’s Player of the Year. His remarkable performances for his club and national team earned him the prestigious award, marking a significant achievement in his career. Lookman’s victory also represented a historic moment for Nigerian football, as it marked the first time the country had won the CAF Men’s Player of the Year award in consecutive years, following Victor Osimhen’s win in 2023. This achievement also continued Nigeria’s dominance in the category, with Nwankwo Kanu and Victor Ikpeba winning back-to-back titles in 1996 and 1997, respectively.

Barbra Banda, who had a sensational season with Orlando Pride in the United States, was crowned the CAF Women’s Player of the Year. Banda’s incredible contributions were key in helping her team win both the NWSL Shield and Championship. She scored the decisive goal in the final, showcasing her clinical finishing and leadership on the field. In addition to her club success, Banda made history at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she scored a remarkable hat-trick. Her third goal in the competition made her the first player in Olympic Games football history to score a hat-trick in two different tournaments, cementing her place in football history.

The CAF Awards ceremony highlighted the rapid growth of football in Africa, showcasing the continent's rising talent in both men’s and women’s football. The award winners exemplified excellence in their respective fields and were celebrated for their contributions to African football. The recognition of Lookman and Banda not only underscores their individual achievements but also signals the increasing visibility and success of African footballers on the global stage.

Alongside Lookman and Banda, South Africa’s goalkeeper Ronwen Williams received accolades for his stellar performances in goal, playing a pivotal role in his team’s successes throughout the year. The 2024 CAF Awards further emphasized the strength of African football, with a growing number of players making their mark in international competitions.

The event in Marrakech was a testament to the bright future of African football, as the continent continues to produce world-class talent capable of competing at the highest levels.
