Edward Ennin, former Member of Parliament for Obuasi East and a former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has offered to assist in uncovering the alleged misappropriation of state funds during the administration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
In an interview with Accra-based UTV, Ennin expressed his willingness to testify before any committee tasked with investigating what he termed the "gross looting of state resources." He claimed that Ghana’s ambassadors and high commissioners hold valuable knowledge regarding the destinations of stolen state funds and suggested that these issues would soon come to light. He recalled a meeting with three ambassadors from France, the UK, and the US, where he said the conversation was alarming: “The ambassadors know about all the money that is stolen from the country and sent abroad. We are all going to see what will happen,” he stated in Twi.
Ennin also discussed his observations during a visit to Guyana, where he allegedly uncovered questionable investments in the country's oil sector. He claimed, “I went to Guyana, and you would be amazed at the kind of things I saw there. Go and ask the people investing in the oil blocks over there. The day of reckoning is coming.”
The former MP stressed his readiness to present evidence when required, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing Ghana's interests. "When the time comes, I’m prepared to go before the committee. I would do this because we have to put Ghana first. I will go and present my evidence," he said.
Additionally, Ennin pawned to bring into the open government officials, including District Chief Executives (DCEs) and Members of Parliament (MPs), allegedly involved in illegal small-scale mining, or 'Galamsey.'
Ennin's comments coincide with the announcement that President-elect John Dramani Mahama has appointed a five-member team to oversee the implementation of Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) upon assuming office on January 7, 2025. The team’s mandate is to gather information on suspected corruption cases, paving the way for ORAL, which is part of Mahama's pledge to recover looted state funds and prosecute corrupt officials, particularly those from the outgoing Akufo-Addo administration.
On December 18, the NDC’s transition spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, revealed the team’s composition, stating, “Anti-corruption, with Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) as a major plank, formed a core part of H.E. John Mahama's policy platform in the 2024 campaign, and he intends to hit the ground running on these commitments.”
Meanwhile, the incoming NDC government repeated its commitment to reversing last-minute recruitments, promotions, and payments made by the outgoing NPP administration. This decision follows growing tensions between the NPP and NDC transition teams, especially regarding alleged last-minute actions by ministries like the Interior Ministry, Ghana Revenue Authority, and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The NDC transition team convicted these actions as acts of bad faith and vowed to void them after the official transfer of power.
In response, Fatimah Abubakar, spokesperson for the NPP transition team, rejected the claims, speaking to Joy News on December 17. She insisted that no agreement had been made to halt the last-minute recruitments and stated that the outgoing administration was within its rights to make administrative decisions.
