Fake Soldier Arrested for Misleading Claims Against President-Elect Mahama
December 18, 2024
In a startling development, police have apprehended a man posing as a soldier for making false and malicious statements against President-Elect John Dramani Mahama. The suspect, whose name is being withheld pending further investigation, was arrested in Accra on December 17, 2024, following a tip-off from concerned citizens.
The suspect reportedly gained attention after a video circulated on social media in which he claimed to possess insider information about Mahama's alleged plans to misuse state resources and undermine national security. His claims sparked outrage and concern among the public, with many demanding an immediate investigation into the matter.
According to a police statement, the suspect donned a military uniform and presented himself as a high-ranking officer with privileged access to classified information. However, upon his arrest, authorities discovered that he had no ties to the Ghana Armed Forces and had acquired the uniform through fraudulent means.
“The suspect’s actions were not only criminal but also dangerous, as they sought to incite fear and undermine the integrity of the President-Elect,” the police spokesperson stated. “We want to assure the public that such attempts to disrupt the peace and stability of the nation will not be tolerated.”
Further investigations revealed that the fake soldier was a known fraudster with a history of impersonation. Police sources disclosed that he had been involved in previous schemes, including duping unsuspecting individuals under the guise of military connections.
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has also condemned the suspect’s actions, emphasizing their commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity. “Impersonation of our personnel is a serious offense. We urge the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities,” a GAF statement read.
In response to the incident, members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have called for stricter measures to curb the spread of fake news and misinformation, particularly in the lead-up to the presidential inauguration. Speaking at a press briefing, NDC Communications Director Sammy Gyamfi urged Ghanaians to remain calm and avoid falling prey to propaganda aimed at discrediting Mahama's leadership.
“This is a clear example of how some individuals are willing to go to great lengths to tarnish the image of our President-Elect,” Gyamfi remarked. “We believe the truth will always prevail, and the law will deal with such perpetrators accordingly.”
The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to face charges of impersonation, defamation, and inciting public unrest. Authorities have assured the public of a thorough investigation to determine whether the suspect acted alone or was part of a larger conspiracy.
This incident comes at a critical time as the nation prepares for the swearing-in ceremony of John Dramani Mahama as President of Ghana on January 7, 2025. The police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order, ensuring a peaceful transition of power.
As investigations continue, Ghanaians are being urged to verify information from credible sources and refrain from sharing unverified claims that could potentially destabilize the country.
This incident highlights the growing challenge of combating misinformation in an increasingly digital world, especially during politically sensitive periods. The arrest serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and accountability in safeguarding Ghana’s democracy.
