Nigerian pastor and Bible teacher Abel Damina has stirred conversation once again by openly sharing some of his controversial beliefs on religion, culture, and human relationships. Known for his unconventional and deeply theological approach to the Bible, Damina has often challenged mainstream Christian traditions and interpretations.
Speaking during a recent church service, Damina emphatically stated, “I don’t believe in Christmas.” The cleric argued that Christmas, as celebrated today, has no biblical foundation and is rooted in pagan traditions. He said the Bible does not specify the date of Jesus Christ's birth, and the observance of December 25 is more cultural than spiritual. “It is a man-made holiday, and as Christians, our focus should be on the gospel, not festivals,” he declared.
In the same sermon, Pastor Damina touched on the often-debated topic of LGBTQ+ individuals in the Christian community. He emphasized that members of the LGBTQ+ community are not inherently bad people and should not be vilified. Instead, he called for compassion, understanding, and a focus on the message of love that Jesus Christ exemplified. “God’s love is for everyone, without discrimination. Judgment belongs to God, not man,” he said, urging Christians to engage in dialogue rather than condemnation.
Another subject that drew attention was his teaching on tithing. Damina asserted that the practice of tithing, as commonly understood today, is not a requirement for New Testament believers. “Nobody paid or received tithe in the New Testament,” he stated. According to him, the concept of tithing belongs to the Old Testament law, which Christians are no longer bound by after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Instead, he encouraged voluntary giving motivated by love and generosity, rather than obligation or fear of divine punishment.
Pastor Damina’s teachings have sparked a mixture of praise and criticism. Supporters applaud his boldness in challenging traditional practices, while critics argue that his views are divisive and undermine long-standing church doctrines.
Despite the controversies, Damina remains steadfast in his mission to “correct doctrinal errors” in Christianity. His teachings continue to provoke thought and debate, forcing many to reexamine their faith and beliefs in light of scripture. For him, the focus is clear: the gospel of Christ is about love, truth, and freedom.
