Hollywood star Jamie Foxx has opened up about the health scare that led to his hospitalization in April 2023. During his Netflix special, Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…, recorded in Atlanta, Foxx revealed he suffered a brain bleed that led to a stroke. The actor described the events leading up to his hospitalization, recalling how he initially experienced a severe headache and requested aspirin, but before he could take it, he blacked out. I don’t remember 20 days, he said. At the time, his daughter, Corinne Foxx, had publicly described his condition as a “medical complication,” without offering further details.
Foxx shared that despite his initial symptoms, he was sent home from the hospital after receiving a cortisone injection. However, his sister, Deidra Dixon, grew concerned when she saw that Foxx was not acting like himself. She insisted on taking him to Piedmont Hospital, where doctors discovered he was suffering from a brain bleed and required immediate surgery. “The doctor told my family, ‘If I don’t go in his head right now, we’re going to lose him,’” Foxx recounted, crediting his sister’s quick thinking and prayers for saving his life.
Although doctors were unable to determine the source of the brain bleed, Foxx described a surreal sense of calm during his ordeal. Your life doesn’t flash before your face; it was kind of oddly peaceful. I saw a tunnel, but I didn’t see the light, he joked. It was hot in that tunnel—am I going to the wrong place?
After his stroke, Foxx woke up on May 4, 2023, in a wheelchair, unable to walk and initially in denial about his condition. Jamie Foxx doesn’t get strokes,” he recalled thinking. He underwent intensive rehabilitation in Chicago to regain his mobility and health. Despite the physical and emotional challenges, Foxx praised the privacy his family kept throughout his recovery. His sister and daughter ensured that his condition remained private until he was ready to speak out. “They didn’t want you to see me like this, and I didn’t want you to see me like this,” he said, acknowledging their efforts to protect him from public scrutiny and potential mockery.
Foxx expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support of his family during his recovery. At the time of his health crisis, he had been filming the Netflix project Back In Action alongside Cameron Diaz. This marks the first time Foxx has shared a detailed account of the medical emergency that nearly cost him his life.
