Businessman Nana Appiah Mensah, widely known as NAM 1, has requested more time from the court to secure new legal representation in his ongoing trial. The CEO of the defunct Menzgold company is facing 37 charges related to his business operations. He had been instructed by the court to begin his defense, but has now sought additional time to find new lawyers after a fallout with his previous legal team.
On July 11, 2024, NAM 1 was notified that he must open his defense in the case involving allegations against Menzgold Ghana Limited and Brew Marketing Consult. However, instead of proceeding, NAM 1 filed a request for a stay of proceedings, pending an appeal against the High Court’s decision. This request was denied on December 5, 2024, with the court ruling that he must continue his defense as initially ordered.
On December 17, 2024, NAM 1 appeared in court without his legal team, raising concerns over their absence. When the court inquired about the whereabouts of his lawyers, NAM 1 explained that he and his defense team had encountered significant differences regarding the direction of his case. He claimed that these differences were substantial enough to end their professional relationship. As a result, he expressed his desire to proceed with his defense alone, without legal representation at that time.
Addressing the court, NAM 1 explained that the disagreement stemmed from conflicting views on how his defense should be approached. He emphasized that the dispute was centered around the strategy his lawyers wanted to pursue in the case. Following this, NAM 1 formally requested more time to hire new legal counsel. He appealed to the court for a reasonable period to seek fresh representation, ensuring that his defense would be properly handled.
In his address, NAM 1 also reiterated his commitment to clearing his name and reaffirming his innocence, not just in the eyes of the court but also to the wider public and the global community. He urged the court to grant him the time necessary to find new legal representation, stressing that this would be in the interest of justice.
The court has yet to make a decision on NAM 1’s request for additional time, and the outcome of this plea will influence the next steps in his high-profile legal case.
