Black Stars Under Fire for Poor AFCON Qualifying Campaign
Dr. Richard Duah Nsenkyire, the financier of FC Samartex, has expressed serious concerns about the Black Stars' disappointing performances, which have drawn heavy criticism from fans and stakeholders. Ghana’s senior national football team failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking their first absence from the tournament in two decades. The team’s poor showing in the Group F qualifiers saw them finish last, with three draws and three losses, earning only three points. This failure has raised questions about the team's commitment, preparation, and overall strategy.
In an interview on Asempa FM's Ultimate Sports Show, Dr. Nsenkyire highlighted inconsistencies in the players’ performances, despite many representing top European clubs. He pointed out that their level of play in domestic leagues far exceeds what they bring to the national team, suggesting that some players lack the commitment required for international duty. He also noted player concerns about the poor condition of pitches in Ghana, which have been blamed for causing injuries. However, Dr. Nsenkyire believes that addressing these issues alone won’t suffice. Instead, he called for efforts to mentally prepare and motivate the players to deliver their best performances on the field.
Despite the setback in the AFCON qualifiers, the Black Stars still have an opportunity to turn things around in the World Cup qualifiers. With upcoming matches against Chad and Madagascar in March 2025, the team has a chance to redeem itself. Dr. Nsenkyire, along with other stakeholders, has urged the Ghana Football Association to prioritize reforms within the technical team and the broader structure of the national side. These changes, he believes, are essential for rebuilding confidence and helping the Black Stars reclaim their place as one of Africa’s elite football teams.
