Alhaji Abu Lamine, a former board member of Asante Kotoko, has called for the inclusion of CK Akonnor and Ibrahim Tanko in the Black Stars' technical team following the team’s disappointing failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Under the current leadership of Otto Addo, supported by John Paintsil, Joseph Laumann, and goalkeeper trainer Fatau Dauda, the Black Stars finished last in Group F of the qualifiers, securing just three points from three draws and three losses. This marks a significant blow to the national team, as it will be the first time in two decades that Ghana will miss out on the prestigious tournament, which will be held in Morocco. The failure to qualify has sparked widespread criticism of the team's performance, and many have questioned the current technical setup, highlighting the need for change in both the coaching staff and the overall management of the team.

Lamine emphasized that the immediate solution should not involve replacing Otto Addo as head coach, given the time constraints and the importance of the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which resume in March 2025. Instead, he believes that strengthening the Black Stars’ support structure by bringing in experienced coaches like Akonnor and Tanko would be a valuable step forward. Both Akonnor and Tanko are highly regarded in Ghanaian football circles, having previously served as assistant coaches to Kwesi Appiah during their tenure with the Black Stars. Lamine highlighted that both coaches have continued to improve their coaching credentials and are well-equipped to contribute positively to the team’s development. He expressed his belief that their inclusion would help elevate the performance of the team, given their familiarity with the national team setup and their understanding of the local football environment.

The Black Stars are now facing an uphill battle in their remaining 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with crucial matches against Chad and Madagascar scheduled for March 2025. Lamine’s call for a change in the technical team comes at a time when there is growing frustration over the team’s underperformance and lack of consistency. The public and football analysts alike have been vocal about the need for improvement, and many are advocating for a more structured and well-rounded technical team that can better manage the challenges ahead. Lamine’s suggestion to include Akonnor and Tanko is seen as a pragmatic approach, given their expertise and commitment to Ghanaian football. With the 2026 World Cup in sight, many are hopeful that the GFA will take the necessary steps to revamp the Black Stars’ technical team and help restore the national pride that has been dented by recent results.
