WAEC Begins Scanning WASSCE Answer Sheets Amid Funding Challenges

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed the start of scanning objective answer sheets for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) following recent repairs to critical equipment. This announcement comes after the government released GH₵25 million to settle part of the council’s outstanding debt. Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsnight on December 23, WAEC spokesperson Mr. Kapi revealed that three out of the council’s essential scanning machines were restored earlier in the day. Although these machines are not fully operational, the repairs have enabled WAEC to initiate the scanning process. However, due to the partial functionality of the equipment, the process will be conducted at a slower pace to ensure accuracy.

In its effort to meet set timelines, WAEC has called back staff members from their Christmas breaks to assist in the urgent task of processing the examination results. Mr. Kapi further disclosed that aside from scanning the objective answer sheets, the council has deployed examiners to carefully review scripts flagged for possible malpractice. While these measures demonstrate WAEC’s commitment to ensuring a smooth results processing phase, the council has emphasized the need for additional financial support to address remaining challenges. Key expenses such as repairing more machines, paying invigilators and supervisors, and enhancing bandwidth for uploading results remain critical. Without further financial aid, WAEC warns that delays in releasing the results may be inevitable.

Despite the challenges, WAEC remains determined to deliver accurate and timely results to candidates. The council assured stakeholders of its commitment to resolving these issues promptly and maintaining its reputation for efficiency and reliability. Candidates and their families have been urged to exercise patience as WAEC continues to work tirelessly to complete the results processing. With government assurances of further funding, WAEC remains optimistic about overcoming its current obstacles and ensuring that the WASSCE results are released without significant delays.
