MP Criticizes Education Minister for Delayed WAEC Funding

Peter Nortsu Kotoe, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Education Committee, has strongly criticized the Minister of Education for neglecting to prioritize the funding needs of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). His remarks come amid concerns over significant delays in the release of crucial financial support to WAEC, which has disrupted the timely processing and release of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results. Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsnight on December 23, Kotoe pointed out that such delays have been a recurring issue over the past several years, and WAEC has often struggled to secure funding until public outcry pushes the government into action. He lamented that this situation has persisted for at least three to four years, affecting the smooth functioning of the examination council.

The MP further criticized the Ministry of Education for failing to ensure that WAEC receives regular funding through the national budget. He argued that WAEC’s financial challenges should not be a recurring issue, and that the Ministry should have allocated consistent funds to the Council as part of the regular budget process. Instead, Kotoe noted, WAEC has had to wait until the Education Committee raises concerns publicly before funds are released. He emphasized that this reactive approach is harmful to the education system and disrupts WAEC's operations. He specifically highlighted that WAEC is currently in need of at least 60 million Ghana cedis to continue its work, yet only 20 million cedis has been promised so far, with no clear timeline for disbursement.

Kotoe accused the Ministry of Education of holding both the candidates and the broader public "to ransom" by ignoring WAEC’s financial needs. He argued that it is the government's responsibility to ensure the timely release of funds, and by failing to do so, it has created unnecessary delays and complications for students, educators, and other stakeholders. The MP also suggested that the government's lack of urgency in resolving these funding issues could be linked to its shifting priorities as the end of its term approaches. He called for immediate action from the Ministry to address the funding crisis, urging the Minister of Education to take responsibility and provide WAEC with the necessary financial support without further delays.
