Agona West NPP Expels 280 Members, Including MP Cynthia Morrison

In a dramatic turn of events, the Agona West branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expelled 280 members, including its sitting Member of Parliament, Cynthia Morrison. This shocking decision was made during an emergency meeting held late last night by the constituency's executive committee.

According to a statement issued by the committee, the mass expulsion was necessitated by alleged acts of misconduct, including actions deemed detrimental to the party’s unity and 2024 electoral prospects. The statement claimed that the affected members had violated critical party regulations and engaged in behavior that undermined the leadership’s authority.

Cynthia Morrison, a prominent figure and former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, is the highest-profile casualty of this purge. Speaking to reporters this morning, Morrison expressed her shock and disappointment at the decision, describing it as a “gross miscarriage of justice.” She denied any wrongdoing, claiming she has always worked in the best interest of the party and her constituents.

“I have dedicated years of service to this party and my people,” she said. “This action is not only unfair but also a betrayal of the values we claim to uphold as a party.” Morrison vowed to challenge her expulsion through the appropriate channels within the NPP.

Local party insiders reveal that the expulsions are tied to growing factionalism within the Agona West branch. Tensions have reportedly been simmering for months, with accusations of sabotage and disloyalty flying between rival factions. The decision to expel such a large number of members just months before the crucial 2024 general elections has raised concerns about the party’s ability to rally support in the constituency.

Supporters of the expelled members staged a protest outside the party’s constituency office this morning, demanding the reversal of the decision. Holding placards with inscriptions such as “Justice for Cynthia” and “Unity, Not Division,” the demonstrators called on the national leadership of the NPP to intervene swiftly.

As the dust settles on this unprecedented move, political analysts are keeping a close eye on Agona West. Many believe this internal wrangling could significantly impact the NPP’s performance in the constituency and beyond.
