Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reflect deeply on the results of the 2024 general elections and prepare themselves for the 2028 elections. He pointed out that the election results show a growing sophistication among Ghanaian voters, with their expectations of politicians becoming higher than ever before. Speaking in an interview in Kumasi, Assafuah admitted that the outcome of the December 7, 2024 elections came as a surprise. While he had been hopeful about the NPP's chances due to the government's success in infrastructure development and poverty alleviation, the voters had a different opinion, which he acknowledged and accepted.
Assafuah also noted the NPP government's efforts in his constituency, such as the construction of roads, the improvement of school infrastructure, and the introduction of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy. These initiatives, he believed, should have positively influenced the party's standing with voters. However, despite these achievements, the party might not have fully met the voters' expectations, leading to a less favorable outcome for the NPP. He stressed that it is essential for the party to take the electorate's feedback seriously, analyze what went wrong, and make the necessary adjustments moving forward. The MP emphasized that the voters’ growing sophistication means that politicians must continually reassess their strategies to stay in touch with the electorate's evolving demands.
Looking ahead, Assafuah urged the NPP to focus on rebuilding trust and adapting to the changing political landscape. He believes that politicians must be responsive to the needs of voters and work hard to maintain their confidence. The Ghanaian electorate, according to Assafuah, is becoming more discerning and is no longer swayed by simple political promises. This evolving political maturity means that political parties, including the NPP, must evolve as well, ensuring that their policies and actions resonate with the electorate’s increasing demands for better governance. The NPP, he concluded, must reflect on the outcome of the 2024 elections, learn from their mistakes, and prepare for a stronger showing in the future.
