Nandaya Yaw Stanley, the Member of Parliament-elect for Wulensi, has addressed speculations about his political allegiance following his independent bid during the 2024 general elections. Stanley affirmed that despite contesting outside the National Democratic Congress (NDC), his loyalty to the party remains intact.
Speaking on Point of View on Channel One TV on December 23, Stanley explained that his decision to run as an independent candidate stemmed from the will of his constituents. According to him, the people of Wulensi encouraged his candidature, even after internal party disputes during the NDC primaries.
"Going independent didn’t mean I forfeited the party or anything—No. It was the choice of the people. They voted for me in the primaries, and there was some contention between me and the incumbent. The people called me back to contest, and I had no other choice but to listen to their voices," he stated.
Stanley highlighted that his campaign was a direct response to the people's demands and their vision for the Wulensi constituency. He emphasized that the overwhelming support he received in the general election validated his decision to run.
Stanley’s journey to becoming an independent candidate was marked by controversy. In the NDC primaries, disagreements arose between him and the incumbent MP, leading to friction within the party at the constituency level. When the NDC leadership opted to retain the incumbent, many of Stanley’s supporters felt their voices were being overlooked.
Faced with mounting pressure from his constituents, Stanley decided to contest as an independent candidate. This decision was not without consequences; he faced criticism from some within the NDC, who questioned his loyalty and accused him of undermining the party.
However, Stanley maintained that his candidacy was in the best interest of the Wulensi constituency, emphasizing that his constituents’ needs outweighed party politics.
After his victory, questions arose about Stanley’s next steps in Parliament, particularly regarding his alignment with the NDC or the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Stanley clarified that he remains committed to serving the people of Wulensi and will consult them before making any decisions about his parliamentary alignment.
“My alignment will depend on my people. I don’t make decisions in isolation. Whatever direction I take in the ninth parliament will reflect the will of those who voted me into office," he noted.
Stanley’s stance reflects a growing trend in Ghanaian politics, where independent candidates are increasingly seen as a viable alternative to traditional party structures. This shift underscores the importance of constituency-level politics and the need for representatives to prioritize their voters’ interests over party loyalty.
Stanley’s independent victory poses a challenge for the NDC, as it highlights internal party disputes and the potential consequences of sidelining grassroots voices. The party now faces the task of rebuilding trust within the Wulensi constituency and ensuring that similar incidents do not occur in the future.
Political analysts have pointed out that the NDC’s handling of the Wulensi situation could serve as a lesson for other political parties. Ensuring transparent and inclusive processes during primaries could prevent such outcomes and strengthen party unity.
As the MP-elect, Stanley has expressed his commitment to advancing the development of Wulensi. He has promised to focus on critical issues such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure development, aligning with the aspirations of his constituents.
Stanley’s victory underscores the power of grassroots politics and the significance of representatives who prioritize the needs of their people. His independent bid, though controversial, has positioned him as a symbol of accountability and responsiveness in Ghanaian politics.
As he prepares to take his seat in Parliament, all eyes will be on Nandaya Yaw Stanley to see how he navigates the challenges of being an independent MP while maintaining his ties to the NDC. His story serves as a reminder that in a democracy, the voice of the people remains paramount.
