THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION SPEAKS...

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to overseeing a free, fair and transparent electoral process, emphasizing that its role is not to select Members of Parliament (MPs) or the President, but rather to ensure that the will of the people is reflected in the election results.

This clarification comes amidst widespread criticism from the Ghanaian over the EC's decision to re-collate and declare results for seven contentious parliamentary constituencies, all of which were won by the rulling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The affected constituencies include Okaikwei Central, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Ahafo Ano North, Ahafo Ano South West, Obuasi East, Tema Central, and Techiman South.

However, the results for Dome Kwabenya and Ablekuma North remain unresolved, leaving the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to strongly reject the EC's declarations, labeling them as illegal. The NDC has vowed to contest these results through all available means.

Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairperson of the Eletoral Commission of Ghana in charge of Corporate Affairs, emphasized the importance of the electoral process, stating that "the commission has always maintained that it is not the responsibility of the EC to make someone the president or Member of Parliament. That is the sole responsibility of the people of Ghana".

Dr. Asare also addressed the issue of the two outstanding constituencies, assuring the public that their MPs-elect would be declared soon, well before the swearing-in of Parliament.

The EC's commitment to transparency and fairness is crucial in maintaining the integrity of Ghana's electoral process. As Dr. Asare noted, the EC's role is to ensure that the will of the people is reflected in the election results, and not to select leaders.

Meanwhile, preparations are  underway to facilitate a seamless transition and swearing-in ceremony for the president-elect and the 276 newly elected members of Parliament. This process aims to ensure a smooth handover of power and maintain stability in Ghana.
