Physics Scholarship Opportunity at the University of Sussex in 2025

The University of Sussex is offering a unique opportunity for budding researchers to explore groundbreaking advancements in quantum technology. The university is providing a PhD studentship for 2025 in Magnetic Microscopy with Bose-Einstein Condensates, ideal for those with a keen interest in atomic and quantum physics.

Sussex Research Group Overview

The research group at the University of Sussex focuses on the study of neutral atomic gases and their quantum properties and interactions. The team uses cutting-edge techniques to develop highly sensitive magnetic sensors with applications across various fields such as nanomaterials, electric vehicle battery monitoring, navigation, and brain imaging.

This group is involved in several innovative projects and partnerships, working to expand knowledge and understanding in quantum physics, bioengineering, and materials science.

Project Focus

The studentship project includes:

  • Using magnetic microscopy to visualize current flow patterns in nanostructured and biological samples.
  • Improving the microscope’s sensitivity for 2D sample imaging, materials science, and bioengineering.
  • Applying electromagnetic fields to cool and trap neutral atoms for the creation of Bose-Einstein condensates.

Learning Outcomes

As part of the project, you will gain hands-on experience in:

  • Quantum technologies (including lasers, optics, electronics, and vacuum systems)
  • Atomic physics and materials science
  • Analyzing current flow patterns in two-dimensional nanostructures

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for this studentship, applicants should:

  • Have a background in atomic and quantum physics.
  • Be from the UK or international locations.
  • Hold or expect to hold a UK upper second-class degree in physics (or its equivalent). A lower second-class degree, combined with a relevant Master’s degree, is also acceptable.

Note: International students or EU nationals without UK-settled or pre-settled status will need to obtain a student visa prior to admission.

Studentship Benefits

This prestigious studentship includes:

  • Full tuition fee coverage for three and a half years.
  • An annual research training and travel allowance of £1,650.
  • A tax-free living bursary of £19,237 per year (2025).
  • Opportunities for both short- and long-term travel to support research.

International students must secure a student visa before being admitted to the program.
