Ghana Shippers Authority Addresses Tema Port Challenges

The Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) has shed light on the causes of recent delays at Tema Port, emphasizing that scanner malfunctions and system glitches have significantly disrupted container delivery and evacuation processes. In a public announcement dated December 24, 2024, the GSA noted that the ongoing scanner breakdown at MPS Terminal 3 and intermittent issues with the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) have negatively impacted cargo clearance. These issues, according to the authority, have created significant bottlenecks, leaving shippers frustrated. Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the GSA has assured stakeholders of its commitment to resolving these technical setbacks promptly.

In addressing these challenges, the GSA reiterated that no shipper should bear additional costs stemming from delays caused by systemic failures at the port. The authority encouraged stakeholders, including consignees and service providers, to report any charges arising from such delays for investigation and potential reimbursement. This statement underscores the GSA’s dedication to protecting the interests of shippers and ensuring fairness in the shipping industry. The announcement also highlighted ongoing efforts by the GSA and other stakeholders to repair the broken scanners and stabilize the ICUMS to prevent further disruptions. By tackling these operational inefficiencies, the GSA aims to restore normalcy and efficiency to Tema Port, Ghana's largest and busiest port.

Signed by Charles Darling Sey, the Eastern Zonal Manager on behalf of the CEO, the announcement reflected the GSA’s proactive stance in ensuring the seamless operation of Ghana’s ports. The statement concluded with a goodwill message to stakeholders, wishing them a peaceful business season and happy holidays. The GSA reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with all parties involved to enhance service delivery within the shipping sector. These interventions, coupled with a firm resolve to uphold the rights of shippers, demonstrate the authority’s dedication to maintaining a robust and efficient shipping ecosystem in Ghana.
