WhatsApp to Discontinue Support for Certain Phones in 2025
WhatsApp has announced that it will cease support for devices running Android 5.0 or iOS 12.0 starting January 1, 2025. This change will impact older models such as the Samsung Galaxy S3, iPhone 5, and LG Nexus 4, among others. The aim is to enhance the app's security, performance, and functionality by leveraging more advanced technology.
Users are encouraged to either update their devices, back up their data, or switch to newer phones to continue using the app without interruption.
As a leading instant messaging platform owned by Meta, WhatsApp's decision may affect millions globally, particularly those with older devices unable to upgrade to the required software versions. While this move is aligned with ongoing technological advancements, it poses a challenge for users reliant on outdated phones. Meta emphasizes that this decision is driven by the need to ensure a safer and more modern user experience in line with current technological standards.
Which Devices Will Be Affected?
To continue using WhatsApp in 2025, users will need devices operating on at least Android 5.0 or iOS 12.0. Some notable models that will no longer be compatible include:
• Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy Ace 3.
• Motorola: Moto G (1st generation), Droid Razr HD, Moto E (1st generation).
• LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90.
• Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V.
• HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601.
• Apple: iPhone 5, iPhone 5C.
These devices, released between 2012 and 2014, lack the necessary hardware and software capabilities to support modern updates, including advancements in artificial intelligence, security enhancements, and more demanding multimedia functions.
Reasons for the Change
WhatsApp has outlined three primary reasons for this decision:
1. Safety: Older operating systems are more susceptible to vulnerabilities, exposing users to cyber threats and data breaches.
2. Performance: Outdated devices often lack the processing power and memory required to support the latest features of the app.
3. Efficiency: By limiting support for older devices, WhatsApp can better allocate its resources and focus on improving the experience for the majority of its users.
