We Are Not Cowards; Nobody Can Stop Us From Being Sworn In As MPs-Baba Sadiq

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Okaikwei Central, Baba Sadiq Abdulai, has emphatically stated his intention to take his seat in the 9th Parliament on January 6th, despite the Electoral Commission (EC) overturning his earlier declared victory. His remarks come in the wake of a contentious re-collation process that altered the outcome of several parliamentary contests.

Baba Sadiq did not mince words, accusing EC Chairperson Jean Mensa of attempting to subvert the will of the electorate to favor the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He pledged that all NDC candidates whose wins were contested would still assume their rightful positions in Parliament, stressing that the party would not bow to intimidation. He issued a resolute warning, declaring, “Neither the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), nor President Nana Akufo-Addo can prevent us. Jean Mensa herself may have to resign on January 6th. We secured clear victories in constituencies like Okaikwei Central, Dome Kwabenya, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, and Obuasi East. This serves as a caution to those seeking to undermine our victories.”

Sadiq also took aim at the Majority Leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, questioning his leadership aspirations. “If your goal was to secure your position as Minority Leader, you have failed. The NDC is not a party of cowards. We embody the spirit of revolution, and that revolution begins on January 6th,” he stated.

He dismissed any threats or emergency declarations, affirming that the NDC would remain steadfast. “We are undeterred by any state of emergency. No one can intimidate us. Nana Akufo-Addo is an outgoing president, Dr. Bawumia has lost, and the IGP has no say in this matter. Jean Mensa cannot dictate who Ghanaians choose as their MPs. We worked hard for these victories and will claim our seats in Parliament.”

Re-Collation Results

The disputed re-collation on December 21st at the EC’s Greater Accra Regional Office yielded significant changes. The NPP was declared victorious in seven of the nine contested constituencies, with results in two constituencies suspended.

Okaikwei Central: Baba Sadiq’s earlier victory was overturned, favoring Patrick Yaw Boamah of the NPP.

Tema Central: Ebi Bright of the NDC lost to Charles Forson of the NPP.

Obuasi East: Patrick Boakye-Yiadom of the NPP narrowly defeated Samuel Aboagye of the NDC.

Techiman South: Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah of the NPP retained his seat.

Ahafo Ano South West: Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah of the NPP defeated Sedik Abubakar of the NDC.

Ahafo Ano North: Nana Agyemang-Prempeh of the NPP overcame Kwasi Adusei of the NDC.

Nsawam-Adoagyiri: Frank Annoh-Dompreh of the NPP retained his seat, defeating Amenorpe Philbert Fummey of the NDC.

The EC has suspended the results for Dome Kwabenya and Ablekuma North, leaving their outcomes unresolved.
