WASSCE Results Update: WAEC Director Retracts 'Scandalous' Comment About Adutwum, Seeks Forgiveness
John Kapi, the Director of Public Affairs at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), has retracted his previous characterization of the Education Minister's statement regarding the release date of the 2024 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results as "scandalous."
In a recent interview on GHOne TV on December 26, 2024, Kapi confirmed that WAEC had received a payment of GH¢35 million from the Ministry of Education, which enables the council to proceed with releasing the results as indicated by Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum. He assured that WAEC would work diligently to ensure that the 2024 WASSCE results are available before the end of December 2024.
"I previously commented on this issue on December 24, and I used the term 'scandalous.' I wish to retract that statement and apologize to the minister," Kapi stated. "It is indeed true that our Director of Finance and the Head of the National Office have confirmed receipt of a GH¢35 million cheque from the Ministry. This is the exact amount we requested, and we will do our utmost to release the results by the end of this month."
Initially, Kapi had described Dr. Adutwum's assertion about the December 29 release date as factually incorrect, stating that there had been no formal discussions or agreements with WAEC regarding such a timeline. "The minister visited us and was shown various issues, including malfunctioning machines and unprocessed objective answer cards. However, there was no formal meeting to discuss timelines or solutions. He then informed the media that we would release results by December 28 or 29, which was not accurate," he explained in an interview with Starr FM.
Kapi expressed disappointment with the minister's conduct and emphasized the need for a collaborative approach to address the challenges causing delays in result processing.
Meanwhile, Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum reassured the public that the 2024 WASSCE results would be released within the week. Following his visit to WAEC, he noted that staff were working through the holiday season to ensure timely results, with approximately 50% of scanning already completed.
Despite WAEC's previous announcements about funding and logistical challenges hindering result processing, Adutwum remained optimistic about meeting the December 29 deadline for the release of results affecting around 460,000 students nationwide.
