After the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 elections, the party is facing a tough challenge as it tries to rebuild. With the defeat still fresh, discussions about who will lead the party in the next elections are already heating up. At the center of these debates is Kennedy Agyapong, a well-known figure in Ghanaian politics, whose bold personality and contributions to the NPP have sparked a new wave of support.

One of Kennedy Agyapong’s strongest supporters is the Central Region boss of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO). In a recent interview, he openly warned the NPP leadership not to ignore Agyapong as their 2028 presidential candidate. Describing him as the party’s “Messiah,” he passionately argued that Agyapong is the only leader capable of bringing the party back to power.

“Kennedy Agyapong has worked tirelessly for the NPP since 1992,” the NADMO boss said. “He is not just a businessman or politician. He uses his resources to help the people in the party, especially the poor. While others use their gains from the party to buy houses abroad, Kennedy Agyapong invests in the lives of ordinary NPP supporters.”

These statements have added fuel to the growing divide within the NPP. On one side, some party members support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who led the party in the 2024 elections. On the other, a rising faction believes Kennedy Agyapong’s straightforward and people-centered approach is what the NPP needs to win in 2028.

Kennedy Agyapong is known for his bold and outspoken nature, which has earned him both admiration and criticism. He is not afraid to speak his mind, often calling out corruption and inefficiency within his own party. This no-nonsense attitude has won him a loyal following among the party’s grassroots members and ordinary Ghanaians. For many, he represents change, fairness, and hope for the future.

The NADMO boss made it clear that sidelining Kennedy Agyapong would not sit well with many party members, especially those who feel ignored or marginalized. “If they cheat Kennedy Agyapong again in 2028, it will not go down well with them at all. A cheat on Kennedy Agyapong is a cheat on all poor people in the NPP,” he warned.

This statement refers to the 2024 NPP primaries, where some Agyapong supporters felt that the process was unfairly tilted in favor of Bawumia. Although Bawumia emerged as the flagbearer, the internal tensions from that contest remain unresolved. For many of Agyapong’s backers, the 2028 elections represent a second chance to give him the leadership position they believe he deserves.

As the NPP prepares for the next elections, the stakes are higher than ever. The decision on who will lead the party could determine whether it can reclaim power or remain in opposition. While some argue that Bawumia’s experience as a former Vice President makes him the best choice, others believe the NPP needs a fresh face like Agyapong, who connects better with ordinary citizens.

Kennedy Agyapong’s style is unique and appealing to many. He is a man of action, often seen helping people directly rather than making promises. From funding educational scholarships to supporting small businesses, his track record speaks for itself. His supporters see him as a leader who genuinely cares about people’s lives and uses his influence to make a real difference.

However, his critics argue that his outspoken nature and confrontational style might hurt the party’s image. They believe a calmer, more diplomatic leader like Bawumia would be better suited to unify the party and appeal to a wider range of voters.

Despite these differences, one thing is clear: the NPP must handle its leadership selection process carefully. If the party fails to unite behind a single candidate, it risks further divisions that could weaken its chances in 2028. Transparency, fairness, and inclusivity will be key to ensuring that the chosen flagbearer has the full support of the party.

The NADMO boss’s warning is a reflection of the passion and tension within the NPP. His words highlight the need for the party to take grassroots concerns seriously and avoid alienating its base. Kennedy Agyapong’s growing popularity among ordinary Ghanaians and his reputation for helping the underprivileged make him a formidable contender.

As the 2028 elections approach, the NPP faces a crucial decision. Will it stick with familiar leadership in Bawumia, or will it take a bold step by backing Kennedy Agyapong? The answer could shape the party’s future and determine whether it can regain the trust of voters.

For now, all eyes are on the NPP as it navigates this challenging path. Whether the party’s leaders will listen to voices like the NADMO boss or take a different route remains to be seen. What is certain is that the road to 2028 will be anything but smooth, and the NPP’s choice of leadership will play a major role in its destiny.
