Mussa Dankwah, Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, has strongly opposed the idea of President-elect John Dramani Mahama serving two consecutive terms. Dankwah believes that Mahama, having already served a term from 2013 to 2016, should complete his second term after winning the 2024 elections and then step down.
Recent publications in Ghanaian media suggest that Mahama may consider a constitutional amendment to extend his term. Proponents argue that Mahama has demonstrated integrity and statesmanship, and that his vision for Ghana may drive his decision to seek an extension. However, Dankwah firmly rejects this idea, stating that Mahama should not be encouraged to emulate leaders like Ouattara of Ivory Coast or Kagame of Rwanda, who have extended their terms in office.
Dankwah's stance is rooted in his belief that Mahama has proven himself to be a true democrat, and that extending his term would undermine this reputation. Instead, Dankwah advocates for Mahama to serve his second term with dignity and respect, and then relinquish power.
It's worth noting that Dankwah had previously predicted a decisive first-round victory for Mahama in the 2024 elections, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) securing a parliamentary majority. While this prediction has borne out, the debate over Mahama's potential term extension has only just begun.
In a Facebook post, Dankwah emphasized the importance of upholding democratic principles and avoiding "politics of convenience." He urged Ghanaians to reject any attempts to extend Mahama's term, instead allowing him to complete his second term and leave office with dignity.
“This is hell NO. Don’t start this conversation. We don’t need politics of convenience. Don’t destroy a man who have proven to be true democrat with this kind of ideas"
As the discussion surrounding Mahama's term extension continues, it remains to be seen how the President-elect will respond to these calls. One thing is certain, however: Mussa Dankwah's opposition to the idea has added a significant voice to the debate.
