Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, Passes Away at 100

Jimmy Carter, the longest-lived president in U.S. history, passed away on December 29, 2024, at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family. He was 100 years old. Carter's remarkable life was marked by his commitment to public service, human rights, and humanitarian causes, earning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 ¹.

Carter is survived by his children, Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. His wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Smith Carter, passed away on November 19, 2023.

"My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love," said Chip Carter, the former president's son. "My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs" ¹.

Carter's presidency, which spanned from 1977 to 1981, was marked by significant economic and diplomatic challenges. He successfully pursued the Camp David Accords, the Panama Canal Treaties, and the second round of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. However, his administration was also confronted with stagflation, an energy crisis, and the Iran hostage crisis.

Despite these challenges, Carter's commitment to human rights and humanitarian causes remained unwavering. After leaving office, he established the Carter Center, which has become a leading institution for promoting democracy, human rights, and global health.

Carter's life was marked by his commitment to public service. He served in the U.S. Navy's submarine service from 1946 to 1953 and later became a peanut farmer in Plains, Georgia. In 1963, he was elected to the Georgia State Senate, where he served for four years. He later served as the 76th Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975.

Carter's presidency was marked by his efforts to promote human rights and democracy around the world. He was a strong supporter of the civil rights movement and worked to promote racial equality in the United States.

Carter's passing has been met with an outpouring of tributes and reflections from around the world. President Joe Biden described Carter as "a man of great integrity and kindness" who "dedicated his life to making the world a better place."

The Carter Center has established a tribute website, where people can share their condolences and memories of the former president. The center has also asked that donations be made in lieu of flowers to support its ongoing work in promoting democracy, human rights, and global health.

As the nation mourns the loss of Jimmy Carter, his legacy as a champion of human rights and democracy will continue to inspire generations to come. His commitment to public service and his unwavering dedication to making the world a better place will be remembered as a testament to his remarkable life and legacy.
