The wait is finally over for the over 460,000 candidates who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Ghana. The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the provisional results, bringing an end to the anxiety and uncertainty that had gripped students and their families for weeks.

The journey to this moment was not without its challenges. WAEC faced significant delays due to financial and logistical hurdles, including the breakdown of essential scanning equipment and an outstanding debt owed by the government. The delays were primarily caused by broken scanners critical for processing examination scripts, compounded by funding constraints.

To address the situation, the Ministry of Education stepped in, releasing an additional GHS25 million to WAEC to facilitate marking activities and ensure the timely release of the results. This funding was a lifeline for WAEC, enabling the council to repair the scanners and broken-down machines.

With the additional funds, WAEC was able to complete the results processing, and John Kapi, WAEC's Head of Public Affairs, confirmed that the results would be released by the end of December. True to their word, WAEC has made the results available online via their official website, (link unavailable), using the provided login credentials.

Candidates Performance

The WASSCE 2024 performance overview in core subjects reveals both strengths and areas for improvement.

English Language

English Language saw a slight decline, with 69.52% of candidates achieving grades between A1 and C6, compared to 73.11% in 2023.

Mathematics (Core)

Core Maths on the other hand, showed a steady improvement, with 66.86% passing with grades A1-C6, up from 62.23% in 2023.

Integrated Science

Integrated Science recorded a notable decline, with only 58.77% scoring A1-C6, compared to 66.82% in 2023.

Social Studies

Social studies maintained a strong performance, despite a slight drop from 76.76% in 2023, with 71.53% achieving grades A1-C6.

WAEC highlighted fluctuating trends in performance over the past four years, with Mathematics consistently showing an upward trend, while English Language, Integrated Science, and Social Studies recorded variations. This indicates a need for targeted interventions in teaching and learning strategies.

As candidates and schools access the results, WAEC urges stakeholders to remain vigilant against fraudulent individuals offering to manipulate results for a fee. The council encourages the use of its results' verification system, including a QR code feature, to maintain the integrity of the results.
