Qatar Celebrates Asian Cup Glory as Saudi Arabia Secures 2034 World Cup Hosting
Qatar kicked off 2024 in jubilant fashion by successfully defending their AFC Asian Cup title, while Saudi Arabia closed the year on a high note by being named hosts of the 2034 FIFA World Cup. These milestones marked a significant year for Asian football, punctuated by triumphs and challenges across the region.
At the Asian Cup in Qatar, the hosts claimed consecutive titles by defeating surprise finalists Jordan in Doha. Akram Afif emerged as the tournament's top scorer with eight goals, earning him the Asian Player of the Year accolade for the second time. Qatar’s victory reaffirmed their position as regional powerhouses and boosted their confidence for World Cup qualification. However, defeats to the UAE and Iran in November cast doubt on their prospects, leading to coach Marquez Lopez's dismissal.
Elsewhere, Japan and Iran demonstrated their dominance in World Cup qualifiers. Despite a quarterfinal exit at the Asian Cup, Japan bounced back to lead their qualifying group by nine points. Iran seized control of Group A, while South Korea and Australia struggled, both undergoing coaching changes after underwhelming starts to their campaigns.
South Korea's turbulent year included a controversial managerial appointment and an Olympic Games qualification failure—their first since 1984. Despite these challenges, they retained top spot in Group B, though Iraq and Jordan remain close contenders.
On the women’s front, Japan’s Kiko Seike succeeded Australia’s Sam Kerr as the Asian Player of the Year after leading Urawa Red Diamonds to victory in the Women’s Asian Club Championship. Meanwhile, the Asian Football Confederation launched the inaugural Women’s Asian Champions League, offering a $1.3 million prize and signaling a boost for women’s football in the region.
In men’s club football, the revamped Asian Champions League Elite saw Saudi Arabian clubs, powered by stars like Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo, cruise through to the knockout stages. Japan's Yokohama F Marinos led the East region standings, keeping the competition fiercely competitive.
The year concluded with FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s announcement of Saudi Arabia as the 2034 World Cup host, making it the second Middle Eastern nation to host after Qatar in 2022. However, critics accused Saudi Arabia of sportswashing its human rights record through heavy investments in sports. The nation will need to build eight new stadiums to accommodate the tournament, marking an ambitious undertaking for the kingdom.
Amid both triumphs and scrutiny, 2024 highlighted the growth and complexity of Asian football on the global stage.
