Grigor Dimitrov Advances as Rune Crashes Out in Brisbane International
Defending champion Grigor Dimitrov began his Brisbane International campaign with a hard-fought victory over German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann on Monday. Dimitrov, seeded second, secured a 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 win, marking his 24th career triumph in Brisbane—a record for the tournament.
The Bulgarian, who has twice won the Brisbane title and reached the final in 2013, continues to thrive in the city where he enjoys the hot and humid conditions. Despite his achievements, Dimitrov has been overshadowed this year by the presence of Novak Djokovic and the return of Australian Nick Kyrgios.
"I came here 15 years ago and since day one I've had that love affair (with Brisbane)," Dimitrov said. "I want to keep on going, keep on testing myself and delivering as long as I can. Hopefully, I can continue and go all the way again."
While Dimitrov advanced, third seed Holger Rune suffered an early exit. The Norwegian was defeated 7-5, 6-3 by Czech Jiri Lehecka, who celebrated the upset as a strong start to the season.
Elsewhere, Australia’s Jordan Thompson, seeded eighth, came from behind to defeat Matteo Berrettini 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Despite being ranked just eight places apart, Thompson noted the depth of competition, saying, "I don't know how he's not seeded. This is one of the strongest tournaments of the year."
In the women’s draw, Polina Kudermetova of Russia defeated China’s Wang Yafan 6-1, 6-3, while her sister Veronika Kudermetova was ousted by American Payton Stearns 6-2, 6-3. Anhelina Kalinina advanced after her opponent Wang Xinyu retired due to injury.
The tournament continues to deliver high-quality tennis as players vie for the prestigious title to kick off the season.
